Gardner's Art Through the Ages

This book is the classic reference for the study of art. It features a history of artists and their works, as well as lucid and engaging descriptions of the styles and periods of art history. Highly recommended for both students and scholars.

Although Gustav Klimt is usually most often remembered for his depictions of sensuous femmes fatales and his breathtaking portraits, he was also an adept and sensitive painter of landscapes. And this image of a Garden with Sunflowers demonstrates the artist's skill at rendering images of lush greenery and flowers.

The painting features an artful arrangement of patterns and colors, as the individual groups of flowers are combined to give the composition a sense of movement and vitality. The focal points of the work are obviously the sunflowers, but this focus is beautifully balanced by the equally striking details of flowers throughout the painting. Decorative, ornate, and enchanting, this image proves that Klimt's mastery of landscape is as compelling and effective as that of his more figurative works.
