| Pre-Raphaelite Art |
The Pre-Raphaelites were an innovative group of Nineteenth century artists. The PRB (or Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, at is was originally dubbed) was founded by seven men - Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Michael Rossetti, James Collinson, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Frederic George Stephens, and Thomas Woolner. These men created the PRB in 1848 with the following goals: 1. To have genuine ideas to express; 2. To study Nature attentively, so as to know how to express them; 3. To sympathize with what is direct and serious and heartfelt in previous art, to the exclusion of what is conventional and self-parading and learned by rote; 4. And most indispensable of all, to produce thoroughly good pictures and statues.
In time, the individual members of the PRB drifted off to follow their own personal artistic muses. But the Pre-Raphaelite movement itself had a significant influence on contemporary art and artists. Ultimately, this lasting impact of the Pre-Raphaelite style is seen in the works of painters such as Edward Burne-Jones and Evelyn De Morgan.

| Pre-Raphaelite Artists |
Edward Burne-Jones | Burne-Jones was inspired by myth and legend, and his paintings reflect an obsession with the melancholy beauty of the world of dreams.
William Holman Hunt | This artist depicted such legendary subjects as Claudio and Isabella and Valentine Rescuing Sylvia from Proteus with precision and skill.
John Everett Millais | Millais was a precise and meticulous painter, and his works glow with fascinating detail; one of his best known paintings - Ophelia - captures the delicate features of an abundance of flowers.
William Morris | Designer, craftsman, and artist, Morris revolutionized the art of his times, and left us a legacy of stunning designs for furniture, wallpaper, textiles, and other objects.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti | A passionate and talented painter (and poet), Rossetti created a distinct type of idealized beauty - he is perhaps best remembered for these images of voluptuous women.
