
This detail of Botticelli's Primavera represents Mercury, god of merchants and messenger of the gods. Mercury stands on the far left side of the painting, facing away from the rest of the figures. With his wand - known in mythology as the caduceus - he banishes the clouds from the Garden of Venus.
