biography |
the architect at a glance
Credited with the phrase, 'less is more', architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was pioneer of modern architecture who, along with other influential architects such as
Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, and Walter Gropius, helped define the International Style. Mies is perhaps best known for the use of what he termed 'universal space' in his buildings... an interior free of columns and structural members that provided flexibility in use and functional arrangement. The last director of the
Bauhaus before it was closed in 1933, his works include the 1929 Barcelona Pavilion, 1951 Farnsworth House, 1956 Crown Hall, and 1958 Seagram Building with Phillip Johnson.
