acropolis
February 2

An elevated part or citadel of an ancient Greek city, acropolis simply means the 'high city'. The best known Greek acropolis is located in Athens, where its formidable presence once dominated the city below. An evolving collection of structures constructed over several centuries, the Athenian acropolis includes many classic examples of Greek architecture such as the Parthenon, Temple of Athene Nike, and the Erechtheion... which features the alluring Caryatid Porch.
