Sistine Chapel
March 6

Born Michelangelo Buonarroti on this day in 1475, the artist Michelangelo is perhaps best known for powerful works of sculpture such as his 1501-1504 'David'. A true Renaissance artist, Michelangelo was also responsible for many other great works during his lifetime... architecture, engineering, and painting. The vast masterpiece of the Sistine Chapel is a remarkable example. Painted in just four years from 1508-1512, it contains over 300 figures and covers some 6,000 square feet of ceiling area. Depicting themes of the creation, fall, and redemption of man, the frescoes weave a dramatic narrative as portrayed in panels such as 'The Creation of Adam'.
