Piet Mondrian March 7 Born on this day in 1872, Dutch painter Piet Mondrian created innovative works that are unmistakable... rectilinear purity so carefully considered that the slightest change would destroy the integrity of the composition. In his paintings, Mondrian placed the individual elements to maintain absolute equilibrium and a strong sense of tension extending to the outer edges of the canvas. A prominent figure in the De Stijl movement, Mondrian sought perfectly balanced compositions rendered in pure line and planes of primary colors, as expressed in his 1921 work, Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue. |
