Empire State Building
May 1

Opened on this day in 1931, construction of the Empire State Building represented a towering achievement during the era of the Great Depression. The world's tallest building when it was completed, the 102 story (1,250 ft.) Empire State Building was constructed in an astoundingly short period of time... averaging 4 1/2 stories per week, with construction of the entire building in a little over a year. Today the Empire State Building remains a classic symbol of the ideal American skyscraper and a dominating presence on the New York skyline.
