Used primarily by Native Americans of the Great Plains, the tipi was an efficient and elegant form of portable shelter. The structure consisted of a framework of poles with an outer covering of animal hide organized around a central firepit. The simple design allowed the tipi to be easily disassembled and moved from place to place.
