Born in Moscow on this day in 1866, Wassily Kandinsky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later taught at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. His paintings are considered to be some of first totally abstract works of art, making no reference to physical objects and often deriving inspiration from other arts such as music.
