Pierre-Auguste Renoir February 25 French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, born on this day in 1841, is perhaps best known for his Impressionist paintings that captured the essential elements of life. Works such as his 1876 Le Moulin de la Galette that celebrates the spirit of a French cafe, are visual feasts filled with brilliant colors, lines, and voluptuous figures. A prolific painter of over 6000 works, Renoir was ravaged with arthritis during the last twenty years of his life. He continued painting the themes that filled his earlier works, struggling with a brush strapped to the stiffened hands of a once great master. |
