Robert Mills
architect
A student of Latrobe, Robert Mills became the first architect trained on American soil. Included among his works are the 1836 U.S. Treasury, 1836 Patent Office, and 1839 Post Office. But perhaps his most notable work is the 555 foot high obelisk of the Washington Monument. His design won a competition for the monument in 1836.
