Soldiers and sailors refer to the orientation of brick units in masonry construction. Soldiers are placed vertically with the narrow edge exposed. Sailors are similar, except the brick is oriented with the wide face visible. Each can typically be seen at the top of parapet walls, openings, or as accents in masonry construction.
