Born on this day in 1885, Asplund's early work reflected the influence of Scandinavian classicism. His later works however, such as the Stockholm Crematorium, were marked by a restrained monumentality which echoed a new modernism. It is perhaps the finest example of monumental religious architecture of the 20th century.
