sfumato
September 23
Sfumato is a term used to describe a technique of painting developed during the Renaissance.
Taken from the Italian word for smoke, fumo, it is a poetic, hazy effect, as seen in the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci. Sfumato is created by layering thin translucent glazes in order to achieve a sensual softness without the use of lines or borders.
