An important aspect of ancient Roman culture, the baths were the heart of society and city life. The bath ritual itself was an involved process of several steps, one of which involved the caladarium. The caldarium was quite literally the hot bath, and it consisted of an area with a washbasin, usually situated beneath a circular window or oculus.
