Born on this day in 1863, Edvard Munch is perhaps Norway's most recognized artist. His works revealed his inner life with symbolic themes of sickness, suffering, and death... and later helped father the development of German Expressionism. He is best known for his 1893 painting, The Scream. In his journal, Munch recounts this anguished moment in time:
'...my friends walked on as I stood there, trembling with fear. And I sensed a great, infinite scream pass through nature.'
