Often seen in the great domes of the Byzantine period, a squinch is a small secondary arch located at the inside corners of a structure supporting a dome. The squinch essentially 'bridges' the span between the primary arches of a square structure, thus creating an octagon upon which the dome rests and distributes its loads in a more uniform manner.
