Used to form an image or pattern in a mosaic, tesserae are small pieces of colored marble, glass, or tile. The tesserae are often fragments of these materials... held in place with grout to create elaborate mosaics that decorated the walls, vaults, and floors of ancient Roman houses and churches of the early Christian and Byzantine periods.
