Pier Luigi Nervi
June 21

Born on this day in 1891, engineer Pier Luigi Nervi is best known for his brilliant structures created in concrete. Aesthetically beautiful, his inventive Italian designs such as the 1932 stadium in Florence and 1959 Palazzetto dello Sport in Rome, illustrate the immense and powerful beauty a material such as concrete could possess. He saw potential in the material, calling reinforced concrete 'the most beautiful structural system humanity has managed to discover'.
