Bijenkorf Department Store
July 6
Designed by Willem Marinus Dudok, the 1931 Bijenkorf Department Store in Rotterdam was perhaps this architect's finest work of modern architecture. The store, a striking composition of horizontal glass bands anchored by powerful masonry elements, was based upon the concept of vertically layered street markets enclosed in glass. Heavily damaged during World War II, the store was demolished as part of the reconstruction of Rotterdam... its wonderful play of form and light forever lost from the city's urban landscape.
