September 13 Born on September 3rd in 1856, Louis Sullivan is best known for his innovative Chicago skyscrapers. However, perhaps his most elegant and engaging buildings were a series of modest bank buildings he designed for several small communities in the Midwest. His banks, such as the 1914 Merchants' National Bank in Grinnell, Iowa are masterful compositions of form and ornament... compelling examples of the spirit of design he chronicled in his 1918 book, Kindergarten Chats. |
