Erik Gunnar Asplund
September 22 Born on this day in 1885, Asplund's early projects such as the 1927 Stockholm Municipal Library, became icons of Scandinavian neoclassicism. His later works however, were marked by a restrained monumentality that echoed a new modernism. His Stockholm Crematorium constructed in 1940, is perhaps the finest example of monumental religious architecture of the 20th century. |
